Fungal hypha and germinated cells of the bacterium Bacillus subtilis

Fungal hypha and germinated cells of the bacterium Bacillus subtilis reveal the uptake of the stable isotope 15N (orange/red), with which the nitrogen-containing nutrients were labelled. The non-germinated spores (white rings) show no enrichment. This image was taken with the NanoSIMS, a secondary ion mass spectrometry system. ©UFZ
